NT to extend optical fibre links to 13 more districts

NEPAL Telecom (NT) is preparing to establish optical fibre links in 13 more district headquarters and their major business hubs in the current fiscal year 2013-14. Optical fibre is considered to be the best backbone for providing voice and high speed data service. As of the last fiscal year, the state-owned company extended its fibre link to 34 districts. As part of its new plan for fibre extension in the current fiscal year, it has awarded the contract to a Chinese firm, Sichuan Qingfeng Communications Company, which will install the fibre connection in the 13 district headquarters. The district headquarters that will be linked by optical fibre are Dang, Salyan, Baglung, Gorkha, Ilam, Panchthar, Rolpa, Siraha, Udaypur, Saptari and Sunsari. NT spokesperson Guna Kesari Pradhan said that optical fibre links had become the primary option for linking network sites to provide quality voice and high speed data service. “The company is also working on a plan to establish ‘circles’ of fibre links which will have alternative transmission links to continue service even when there is a problem,” said Pradhan. She added that NT had been able to provide high speed internet service in different parts of the country due to the enhanced optical fibre links. NT has been providing data services such as WiMax, Sky Pro, GSM 3G and ADSL having high speed capacity apart from normal internet, dial-up and GPRS service on mobile handsets. The company has also been planning to start Fibre to the Home (FTTH) service focusing on corporate customers from the current fiscal year. Normally, NT has been using radio transmission which is known as microwave link and satellite link to provide voice and data services. NT officials said that even though radio and satellite links were fine for voice communication, they lacked capacity for expanding data services. NT has been continuing its optical fibre project as per its annual plans in a bid to extend fibre links to all 75 districts in the country. In the hilly regions, NT has been using high extension electricity poles of the Nepal Electricity Authority, and in the Tarai it is laying underground cables for extending the fibre connection. This year, NT will extend the fibre link on the Tulsipur-Salyan, Baglung-Beni, Abukhaireni-Gorkha, Kathmandu-Galchhi-Gajuri , Budhabare-Phikkal-Aaitabare- Ilam-Phidim, Balefi-Chautara, Galchhi-Tarukghat-Tr ishuli, Syangja-Galyang, Khalanga- Jhimruk-Lamhi and Sandhikharka- Khalanga routes, said NT officials. The company is currently working on different routes that will bring Saptari, Morang, Sunsari, Udaypur and Siraha into the fibre network. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Communications is also set to establish a fibre network along the Banepa-Bardibas road through a separate project in the current fiscal year. The South Asian Sub-Regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Information Highway project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The ministry has targeted setting up 30 community e-centres using the fibre network.
