Study team formed to work out dairy policy

In a bid to devise policies to ensure hygienic production and a protected supply channel for dairy products, the Ministry of Agriculture Development (MoAD) has formed a committee for the field-study of dairy production and its supply channel to recommend suggestions to the government. The 11-member committee led by joint-secretary Prabhakar Pathak is assigned to submit the study report by August 16. In the process of filing cases against producers of substandard milk and dairy products, MoAD on Wednesday said it is also mulling on how to stop the repetition of such incidents. Two weeks ago, the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control sealed Aadhunik Dairy in Balaju and Sanjivani Dairy in Pandu Bazar, Bhaktapur, after laboratories detected the presence of coliform and other bacteria in a higher than acceptable degree in pasteurized milk. Issuing a statement, the ministry said it was preparing to file cases against them. The ministry has said poor sanitary conditions right from farms to the pasteurization and milk production plants led to contamination. The ministry also said the National Diary Development Board has been monitoring the implementation of the code of conduct in dairy industry.
