"Some goods are hard to identify because there is nothing written on the packaging," said Bishnu Poudel, undersecretary, describing the condition of goods displayed in NSM. "There is nothing -- neither the name of the product nor manufacturing date or weight -- in many consumer items," he said.
For example, a Thai mushroom packet sold in the department store does not have other details except price tag of Rs 170. Likewise, packed rice, beaten rice, wheat flour and lentils also lack names of producers, manufacturing dates and weight. "It is packed by us and we normally put price sticker," said NSM supervisor Raju Shrestha.
However, he agreed to mention all details in the packets. "From tomorrow, you will find detailed stickers on packages," he assured. The DAO inspection team gave a summons letter to the NSM management asking it to effect changes within 24 hours.
Among four shops inspected, RS Store, located in Lalitpur sub-metropolitan building was found without pricelist (retail and wholesale). Two other shops had price-list and the prices were below the rates provided by Lalitpur Association of Industry and Commerce (LAIC). "There is no resemblance between those rates," said Dhurva Lal Tandukar, representing National Consumer Forum in the raid team.
Buddhi Sagar Shrestha, coordinator of Market Supervision Division of LAIC, said, "Our duty is to provide average market price for a week."
