Arrivals via air down 3.5pc


TOURIST arrivals via air in Nepal dropped by 3.5 percent to 320,989 in the first seven months of 2013, compared to the same period last year. Figures released by Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) show arrivals dropped due to slowed growth from the South Asian and European markets. Visitors from South Asia and Europe dropped by 18.6 percent and 15.6 percent respectively in the first seven months. In the month of July, visitor arrivals increased by a marginal 0.28 percent to 38,560. Arrival from India declined by 15.74 percent, or 2,361 less Indian traveled Nepal in July this year. Arrivals from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka dropped by 32.26 percent and 61.68 percent respectively. Visitor arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia region) recorded growth of 14.36 percent, with China (17.91 percent), and Malaysia (77.10 percent), South Korea (0.90 percent) and Thailand (87.21 percent) showing growth. However, arrivals from Singapore and Japan dropped by 2.16 percent and 12.19 percent respectively. From long-haul markets, Europe registered an overall growth of 6.59 percent. Arrivals from Belgium, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia have recorded growth of 54.35 percent, 22.32 percent, 3.45 percent, 27.32 percent and 62.62 percent respectively. Arrivals from Denmark, Germany, France, Norway, Spain and Switzerland were down by 0.87 percent, 6.79 percent, 7.70 percent, 53.33 percent, 14.97 percent and 30.92 percent respectively. Likewise, arrivals from Canada and the US also showed positive growth of 107.10 percent and 5.10 percent respectively. Australia posted growth of 32.58 percent while New Zealand showed decrease in arrival figure by 7.63 percent. A total of 43,063 foreign tourists departed from TIA in July 2013.
