E-CON Pills Launched by CRS

Nepal CRS Company — the pioneer of social marketing in the country — has launched e-CON, emergency contraceptive pills (ECP). Secretary Dr Dirgha Singh Bam at the Ministry of Health and Population announced the launch of e-CON. The new contraceptive, e-CON, is an emergency contraceptive pill that prevents unwanted pregnancy, said the company. When taken before a woman has ovulated, ECPs prevent the release of an egg from the ovary or delays its release by five to seven days. “eCON is effective, however, for up to 120 hrs (five days) after unprotected sex,” claims the company. Timely access is important because the sooner the woman takes e-CON, the more effective it is. However, e-CON will not work if a woman is already pregnant. Available over the counter in medical shops, e-CON has a maximum retail price of Rs 50. Nepal CRS Company managing director Krishna Bahadur Raymajhi said that this product would greatly help in minimizing unsafe abortion practices.

This latest product of the company that has been promoting family planning and health related products for the last three decades offers ‘a simple solution for a difficult situation’. CRS has been working in three major thematic areas: Family Planning, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Maternal Child Health. It markets and promotes a basket of products like Dhaal Deluxe, Panther Premium, Sangini, Nilocon White, Sunulo Gulaf, Long-term Temporary Methods: Jadell/Norplant and IUD, Nava Jeevan (ORS), Clean Delivery Kit (CDK), Virex (Chlorine decontamination powder), Clean Delivery Kit (CDK), and Piyush (water disinfectant).
